Running to the Father Instead of Hiding
There are certain phone calls that instantly make your heart drop. For me, one of those came from the school office. The principal was calling.
Immediately, my mind started racing. Which child is it? My 16-year-old? My 6-year-old?
To my surprise, it was my kindergartener. Apparently, he had been struggling to keep his hands and feet to himself, even after several reminders from the teacher. As a result, he needed a visit to the principal’s office.
I remember that familiar feeling of dread. The kind that tightens your stomach before you even know the full story. Many of us know that feeling well—not just from school days, but in life. We know what it feels like to fail, disappoint someone, or realize we’ve made a mistake.
So often, we treat God the same way children sometimes treat their parents after doing wrong. We hide. We avoid prayer. We feel ashamed. We think, “I messed up. I don’t want Dad to find out.”
But that is not the heart of our Heavenly Father.
Jesus doesn’t invite us to run away in fear. He invites us to come closer in honesty. Because of His grace, our response can become:
“I messed up. I need to go talk to Dad about it.”
What a beautiful difference.
God already knows our failures, yet He still welcomes us with mercy. He corrects us because He loves us, not because He wants to shame us. Conviction from the Holy Spirit is not meant to drive us into hiding; it is meant to draw us back into relationship.
The enemy says, “Hide from God.”
Grace says, “Run to the Father.”
Scripture reminds us:
“Trust in the Lord with all thine heart; and lean not unto thine own understanding. In all thy ways acknowledge him, and he shall direct thy paths.”
— Book of Proverbs 3:5–6
Part of trusting the Lord is trusting His heart toward us—even when we fail. We can acknowledge our mistakes without fear because Jesus has already made the way for forgiveness, restoration, and growth.
As parents, we want our children to come to us when they’ve done wrong, not run from us in fear. Our Heavenly Father desires the same from us.
Today, if you’re carrying guilt, shame, or disappointment, don’t hide from God. Go talk to Dad. He is waiting with wisdom, grace, and love.
