When God Says No, There’s a Bigger Yes Ahead
Scripture: Romans 8:28 (NIV)
“And we know that in all things God works for the good of those who love him, who have been called according to his purpose.”
Have you ever been so sure God was saying yes to something that you couldn't imagine any other outcome?
Recently, I found myself in that very place. There was something I was really hoping for, and I felt so sure God was saying YES. All the signs seemed to point in that direction. The timing felt right. The possibilities seemed to be falling into place. I genuinely believed this was something God had for me.
And then, suddenly, the door completely closed.
I was devastated. Honestly, I was shaken. I had been so confident that this was where God was leading me that I didn't know what to do when the answer turned out to be no. How could I have felt so sure and still been wrong? Why would God lead me down a path that ended somewhere I never expected?
Maybe you've been there, too. You've prayed, hoped, waited, and watched for God to move. You've seen what you thought were all the signs. You've started imagining what could be. And then the answer comes back differently than you expected.
It's tempting in those moments to question everything. Did I hear God wrong? Did I miss something? Has He forgotten me?
But here's what I'm reminding myself: Just because God closes a door doesn't mean He has stopped working. And just because I don't understand His answer doesn't mean I can't trust His heart.
I don't know why God brought me down the path He did. I may never fully understand why something that seemed so right didn't work out. But I do know this: God's character hasn't changed. He is still good. He is still faithful. He still loves me. And my disappointment doesn't change any of those things.
Sometimes, we think God's goodness means He will give us the things we ask for. We believe that if we pray enough, trust enough, or see enough signs, the outcome will be what we hoped for. But God's goodness isn't measured by how often He says yes to our plans. It's measured by who He is.
Our perspective is limited. We see the opportunity in front of us, but God sees the whole picture. We see what we want, but He sees what we need. We can only see today, while He holds tomorrow.
And while I don't believe every disappointment will eventually make sense to us, I do believe that nothing is beyond God's ability to redeem. Romans 8:28 doesn't promise that everything that happens will be good. It promises that God can work in all things for good. Even the heartbreak. Even the detours. Even the doors that close when we were so sure they would open.
Sometimes, God's no is protecting us. Sometimes, it's redirecting us. And sometimes, it's simply an invitation to trust Him when we cannot see what comes next.
We may not always get the explanation we want, but we can hold on to the God we know.
And perhaps the bigger yes isn't always another opportunity, a better job, a different relationship, or the fulfillment of another dream. Sometimes, the bigger yes is a deeper faith. A stronger dependence on God. A new perspective. A heart that learns to trust His goodness even when life doesn't go according to plan.
I'm still working through my own disappointment. I don't have all the answers, and I'm not going to pretend that a closed door doesn't hurt. But I'm choosing to believe that this isn't the end of God's goodness in my story.
Because God was good when I thought the answer was yes. And He is still good now that the answer is no.
Maybe you're standing in front of a closed door today, wondering what God is doing. Maybe you're disappointed, confused, or even questioning whether you heard Him correctly.
Take heart. You don't have to understand the path to trust the One leading you. You don't have to see the next open door to believe that God is still at work.
God's no is not the end of your story. Keep trusting His heart, even when you cannot understand His hand. There may be a bigger yes ahead, but even before you see it, you can rest in the truth that the God who loves you has not changed.
Father, thank You for being good, even when life doesn't unfold the way I hoped. When doors close and disappointment comes, help me resist the urge to question Your goodness. Give me the faith to trust You when I don't understand, the courage to release what I thought would be, and the peace to believe You are still working behind the scenes. Remind me that my future is safe in Your hands and that no disappointment is beyond Your ability to redeem. Help me trust Your heart more than I trust my own understanding. In Jesus' name, Amen.
