SAFTEY TIPS

Stay Warm

Dress in layers: This is the most effective way to trap body heat. Wear a moisture-wicking base layer, insulating middle layers (like fleece), and a windproof and waterproof outer layer.

Use insulation: Stuffing newspaper or other insulating materials between layers of clothing can add warmth.

Protect your extremities: Wear multiple socks and waterproof boots that cover your ankles. Keep your feet dry, as they are crucial for staying warm.

Cover your head and hands: Wear a hat and gloves or mittens. A scarf can also help keep your neck and face warm.

Use what you have: A plastic bag can serve as a waterproof layer or can be stuffed between clothing for insulation. A warm blanket or a coat that can convert into a sleeping bag can also be very useful.

Find shelter and resources

Seek warming centers: Check for available warming centers, especially when temperatures are low.

Contact emergency services: Call 2-1-1 to get connected to local homeless resource assistance agencies and emergency shelters throughout Michigan.

Utilize ERs if necessary: If you are struggling to find shelter, be aware that emergency rooms may offer a temporary solution to get out of the cold. Being polite and cooperative can increase your chances of receiving assistance and resources like blankets and food.

Additional tips

Stay hydrated and eat warm food: When it's cold, the body burns more energy to stay warm, so eating is important. Warm food can help provide a longer-lasting feeling of warmth.

Keep your belongings dry: Your belongings will be less effective at keeping you warm if they get wet.

Use a foam pad: If you have a sleeping bag and blankets, use a foam pad to insulate yourself from the cold ground.

Stay mobile: If you are sleeping in a car, it's often best to park in a well-lit, safe area and move your car regularly.

Be mindful of frozen food: Food items can freeze in the cold weather. You may need to use hand warmers or other means to thaw them out.
