Octopi

I just LOVE this take on “pigs in a blanket'“ and I can’t wait to make these for my grandsons! It’s so adorable! Just cut the hot dog before wrapping it in flaky, buttery crescent dough, the “legs” curl outward during baking to look like cute little octopuses. (or is it octopi?)

Ingredients

  • 1 tube (8 oz) refrigerated croissant or crescent rolls

  • 8 hot dogs

  • 1 tbsp melted butter (optional)

  • For decorating: edible eyes

Directions

  • Preheat your oven to 375°F and line a baking sheet with parchment paper

  • Lay each hot dog flat. Slice lengthwise up the middle of the hot dog, stopping about 1.5 inches from the top to leave an “uncut” head. Turn the hot dog a quarter-turn and make another lengthwise slice. You should now have 4 legs. Repeat this step once more to create 8 separate legs.

  • Wrap in dough: Unroll the croissant dough and separate it into triangles

  • Place the uncut end of the hot dog at the wide end of the triangle. Roll the dough around the hot dog toward the pointy end. Leave the pre-cut legs exposed so they stick out of the dough.

  • Gently fan out and separate the 8 legs so they curve outward

  • Bake: Place seam-side down on the baking sheet. Brush the tops of the dough with melted butter and bake for 11-13 minutes, or until the croissant dough is golden brown and cooked through.

  • Decorate: Let them cool slightly. Use mustard, ketchup, or small dots of mayonnaise to draw two eyes and a smile on the round “head” of each octopus…or edible eyes if you got ‘em!

  • ENJOY!
