When You’re Drowning in Chocolate

One of the things we’ve been doing on the afternoon show this year is going through the book “Catching Whimsy” from Bob Goff.  There’s one phrase that has stuck with me - the idea of “drowning in chocolate”.

Imagine someone lowering you into a bathtub filled with chocolate.

At first, you’re thinking, This is amazing.

Chocolate everywhere. You’re living the dream.

But eventually… you realize you’re drowning.

And that’s what life can feel like sometimes.

Not because things are bad. Actually, sometimes we’re overwhelmed because there are so many good things. Good opportunities. Good friendships. Good activities. Good causes. Good things for our kids. Good things at church. Good things at work. Good things we genuinely want to do.

But even good things can become too much.

And here’s something I’m learning: just because something is good doesn’t mean I have to say yes to it. Sometimes God gives us something wonderful for a particular season. And when that season changes, it can be okay to let that thing go.

That doesn’t mean it wasn’t important. It doesn’t mean you failed. It doesn’t mean you’re ungrateful. It just means you’re making room for what God has for you now.

Jesus Himself stepped away from the crowds. He made time to rest, pray, and be with His Father. He didn’t meet every need or say yes to every request.

Maybe you need permission today to release something good.

Maybe you need to step back from an activity, a commitment, or even an opportunity that once fit beautifully into your life but doesn’t anymore.

You don’t have to feel guilty about it.

Because you weren’t created to drown in chocolate. Even if it is really, really good chocolate.
